Jemimah Hiscox is a mother of three based in Armidale NSW. Passionate about increasing health, wellbeing and quality of life through movement, she started Moved Armidale, a studio offering movement classes for people of all ages and all walks of life. Below, Jemimah tells us about Moved, why she started and what she has planned for the future.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Jemimah Hiscox, movement coach and enthusiast. I have just started a local business called Moved, based in Armidale NSW. I offer classes and private coaching in movement principles.
I teach you to be curious about your bodies – to become aware of your movement patterns and understand how that impacts your overall health and wellbeing. The principles I teach can be applied to any movement you undertake – whether that be lifting weights, lifting your child or lifting yourself up off the floor.
Why did you start Moved?
In the past, our lives were naturally filled with a lot more movement than they typically are today. Now, we live in a sedentary society and are paying the price for it – and while our lifestyles and environments have changed, the movement requirements of our bodies have not. My goal is to help people see movement as much more than just exercise, opening up endless possibilities to move more every day. I want to help people live a life infused with good quality movement without having to put hours aside to exercise.
What do you have planned for the future?
I hope to see my business grow so I can help more people to move in ways that nourish their body and reduce wear-and-tear. I hope to offer additional specialist classes, such as pre and post-natal movement and movement for the elderly.
I’m also planning to branch out into workplace movement. Specifically, I want to help workplaces create an open and accepting culture of ‘movement at work’. On an individual level, I’d like to assist employers and employees to incorporate more quality movement into their working day.
Finally, following on with my larger-scale plan to be a part of a shift towards a culture that embraces movement, I’ll continue to post regular social media content to help people move more and move better in their everyday lives.
If you could give someone one piece of advice about starting a small business, what would it be?
The transition from being a stay-at-home mum to opening a new business was a scary thing. It felt very risky and took me way out of my comfort zone. I struggled at times with thoughts that tended toward imposter syndrome – something many people face when starting out on a new career path. I think that it’s really important to challenge these thoughts with regular reminders, such as ‘I may not know everything but I know more than enough’ and ‘it’s hard but I can do this’ – because you can!
