Celebrating Valentine’s Day with your favourite human in Armidale, NSW? We’ve prepped this bespoke itinerary, from cool cafes for the essential caffeine hit to fine dining come nightfall, so you can focus on the game of love.

A loved-up breakie

Kick-off your morning in Armidale with a high-quality caffeine fix at one of the these top-tier spots. We suggest you pack some heart-shaped sunglasses, you know, to really set the mood.

  • L’Atelier Patisserie: Get that Parisian / city of love vibe right here in the highlands with authentic French pastries like buttery croissants and rich éclairs. This artisan spot pairs bold Botero coffee with a super cool atmosphere for a perfectly loved-up start.
  • Double Drop: For the couple who digs a modern, minimalist vibe, Double Drop serves up exceptional brews and contemporary bites (hello Black Market Bagels) in a space that’s always buzzing.
  • Herdies: A local heavyweight for a reason. Herdies brings a serious coffee game and a next-level setting next door to local brewery, The Welder’s Dog (make a mental note to drop by and see these guys later in the evening!). The perfect spot to eat breakfast baked goods (our vote’s for the cinnie scroll) and stare into each other’s eyes.
  • SeeSaw Coffee Co: A rock solid, reliable pick for a casual morning. It’s the perfect, country garden style backdrop to ease into the day over a stellar cup of coffee and sweet treats to boot (can’t go past the toasted coconut bread here, lush)

Lunch and local flavour

Next stop, a lunch date to write home about. Take your pick for a midday meal that showcases Armidale’s unique mix of culture, craft brewing, and regional produce.

  • Dobson’s Distillery: A short jaunt from town, Kentucky is home to Dobson’s Distillery. Here, chef Lyn Dobson crafts a menu around the best produce in the New England. Beyond their award-winning spirits, expect gourmet hits like local beer-infused sausages, homemade pies, or curated graze plates. Lunch kicks off at 12:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays – heads up, bookings are non-negotiable folks.
  • Six Counties Cafe NERAM: A blend of high art and high-quality cuisine = dreamy. Found at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), this licensed space serves a seasonal menu that’s all about locally sourced ingredients. Word to the wise – the corn fritters are a-mazing.
  • Goldfish Bowl Cafe: Rustic-chic at its best. With a grapevine-covered courtyard and a wood-fired oven that pumps out fresh organic bread and pizzas (on Fridays), it’s a vibe that screams hidden Melbourne laneway.
  • Great Hops Brewery: If your Valentine’s style is more ‘boots and brews’, this family-run craft brewery is the way to go. Think local beers paired with a killer American-inspired menu of slow-cooked brisket and waffle fries.

Dinner is served

As the sun sets, Armidale’s serving up dinner in venues bursting with historic Art Deco elegance to intimate Italian haunts.

  • Peterson’s Winery: Feeling fancy? For the ultimate romantic backdrop, dine hand in hand overlooking heritage-listed gardens. Pair Peterson’s cool-climate, high-altitude wines with a classic menu for a truly dreamy evening.
  • Tattersalls Hotel: Step into a slice of history at this striking Art Deco landmark. The fine-dining restaurant feels seriously chic, so much so we suggest wearing gold, or glitter, or both. These guys deliver premium Australian produce in a premium love day setting.
  • White Bull Hotel: A Marsh Street staple. If you want a hearty, classic pub dinner in a central, established venue, this is your solid choice. You can’t go past the schnitty and chips in our book.
  • Manny’s on Marsh: Perched above the White Bull Hotel, Manny’s is the local destination for authentic Italian. It’s an intimate setting focused on fresh, vibrant produce – perfect for long conversations over pasta. Highly recommend a Negroni (or two) perched on the balcony overlooking the street below.
  • Signor Vertelli: Fun, stylish, and high-energy. This spot serves up ‘can’t-stop-eating’ wood-fired pizza in a modern setting that feels special, cool and cosy all at once. Our top tips here? Order one of everything.

A sweet treat

Fact: No Valentine’s Day is complete without a sugar hit to wrap things up.

  • Signora Gelato: The sister spot to Signor Vertelli and the final word in Armidale desserts. Grab a fresh gelato and choose from traditional or experimental flavours for an extra sweet finish to the day.
  • Tumbl: For a more playful, customisable dessert, stroll down the Beardy Street Mall to Armidale’s first-ever frozen yoghurt store. Select your flavour, pile on the sweet treat toppings, and enjoy the outdoor seating area. They are open daily until 9.00 pm (or 10.00 pm on weekends), making it a perfect late-night stop. You’re welcome, lovers. x
