There’s something undeniably magical about Moree. It’s a feeling you get the moment you roll into town – a sense of space, warmth, and the gentle hum of a community that knows exactly what it has to offer. But lately there is a notable spring in the local rhythm due to the opening of the refurbished hot artesian pools at Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre (MAAC). So pack your swimmers and leave your worries at the door, because the steam is officially rising – ready and waiting for both locals and the army of tourists who make the annual pilgrimage to these healing waters.

For those of us who live and breathe regional life, we know that the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre (MAAC) is more than just concrete and water – it’s the social heart of the town. Some locals even make their way to the MAAC at the same time every day, to take in the waters while chatting with friends old and new. As Moree Plains Shire Council’s Mayor Cr Susannah Pearse acknowledged, having these pools out of action for an extended period has been a frustrating wait for everyone, from the regular dippers to the travellers who plan their entire road trip around a soak in the famous mineral-rich waters.
“The artesian pools at the MAAC are an integral part of our community, and a popular spot for tourists and locals to relax and rejuvenate,” Susannah said.
But good things, and in this case, great things, take time. The reopening follows a significant revitalisation project, with a total spend of $3.2 million which saw the facility’s three hot artesian pools fully rebuilt. The result is a facility that looks towards the future while honouring the history that put Moree on the map.
“Artesian water has been part of our identity since it was accidentally discovered in 1895. It has been a constant drawcard and a huge source of pride, and hence council, our community, and our tourism operators are delighted to have our facilities open once again and look forward to welcoming visitors back to our shire.”
Why Moree’s water is the real deal
If you’ve never dipped into a Moree artesian pool, you’re missing out on one of Australia’s finest natural remedies. The water that flows into the MAAC pools is something special – it’s been filtering through the Great Artesian Basin for millions of years. It arrives at the surface naturally heated, mineral-rich, and ready to soothe those aching muscles. Therapeutic benefits also include improved blood circulation, joint pain relief, skin rejuvenation, natural detoxification and all-important stress-relief. So whether you’re dealing with the stiffness of a long drive, the wear and tear of a physical job, or just the mental fog of modern life, a soak here is legendary for a reason. Visitors come from across the country to experience this ‘nature’s magic’, and locals know it’s the best way to start or end the day. It’s restorative, it’s relaxing, and quite frankly, it’s the ultimate regional luxury.
Know before you go
With the pools now fully operational, the MAAC is back to its standard rhythm, ready to welcome you for your daily dose of wellness. If you are planning a visit, here’s the lay of the land:
