Teonie Kalinowski is the proud owner of Chandler + Co, a boutique candle business based in Uralla NSW. Selling over 50 beautiful scents of candles and soy wax melts, Chandler + Co has a huge range of candles to choose from, and with names like Sparkling Watermelon and Pineapple Driftwood, we can only imagine why you don’t have one of these in your office or your living room right now. Tell us a little about Chandler and Co…
I started making candles over three years ago. I only had a few scent options in both soy candles and melts to begin with, now I have over 50 scents in multiple products. Have you wondered about my business name? A Chandler is a candle and soap maker – I thought the name was the perfect fit.
Why did you start your business?
I have a candle obsession and would do anything for a candle that burns properly and smells divine, but I could never find a caramel candle that was just right. After months of researching products all over Australia and a lot of trial and error,I finally made the perfect candle. I wanted everyone to have beautiful smelling homes and that was the beginning of Chandler + Co.
What has been your most memorable moment?
To date, my most memorable moment was my first ever sale – the same day I launched my business. I still remember the ding of my email notification, altering me that I had an order. I never thought it was going to happen. I still get very excited when I hear it.
What do you have planned for the future?
I’m currently working on branching out and getting my products into more stores. One day, I would love to have my own shop front – I would make and sell the candles onsite so that everyone can see behind the scenes of what being a chandler is like.
If you could give someone one piece of advice about starting a small business, what would it be?
Always be passionate about what you are doing – no matter how big or small the task may be.
