Laces at the ready folks! The much-anticipated Run the Plains event is back for its second year, promising a weekend of exhilarating races, community spirit, and unforgettable experiences. Mark your calendars for Friday-Saturday, 26-27 September and prepare to discover why this event is quickly becoming a signature celebration in Moree.

We’ll cut to the chase (see what we did there?!), last year’s inaugural Run the Plains was a phenomenal success, with 431 participants taking to the streets of Moree. This year, the organisers are building on that success and Moree Tourism CEO, Julie Rushby, is passionate about the event’s potential.
“Run the Plains is quickly becoming Moree’s Signature Event,” she says. “It’s more than just a race, it’s a celebration of health, community and our region’s identity.”
This right here taps into the very core of Run the Plains. It’s a chance for locals and visitors alike to come together, challenge themselves, and celebrate the unique beauty and camaraderie of the Moree Plains.
“We’re ready and raring to deliver a safe and professional event that not only brings pride to our community, but also drives real visitation and economic benefits to the Moree Plains,” adds Julie.
Community gains
The impact of events like this on regional communities is undeniable, and your participation directly contributes to the vitality and growth of Moree. So, how can you join in the fun?
The festivities kick off on Friday night with the Kamilaroi K, a 1km sprint down the main street of Moree. This isn’t just a race; it’s a vibrant street party designed to create a real community carnival atmosphere. Imagine the energy as runners of all ages and abilities sprint through the heart of the town, cheered on by locals and visitors. It’s the perfect way to start the weekend and get a taste of Moree’s welcoming spirit.
On Saturday, the action moves to the picturesque Mehi River, where a series of races will take you through some beautiful, natural landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a casual walker, there’s a distance for you. Choose from the 3km, 5km, 10km, or the half marathon (21.1km). For the ultimate challenge, take on “The Triple” – a combined 36.1km race that includes the half marathon, 10km, and 5km events.
Beyond the running track, this event invites you to experience all that Moree has to offer – and with a line-up of activities planned for the entire weekend, you’ll have plenty of reasons to extend your stay.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can experience if you choose to make a weekend of it…
- Thursday 25 September: Get a dose of culture at the BAMM Regional Gallery, which will be opening its regional art fair. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see the work of talented local artists and immerse yourself in the region’s creative scene.
- Friday 26 September: After the excitement of the Kamilaroi K, enjoy live music down the main street. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soak up the festive atmosphere.
- Saturday 27 September: Head to the Amaroo Tavern for a low-key after-party. Share stories with fellow runners, celebrate your achievements, and enjoy some true country hospitality.
- Sunday 28 September: What better way to recover than with a breakie at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre? Afterwards, soothe your tired muscles in the famous hot mineral baths, a quintessential Moree experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
