As one of ANTG’s very first hires more than six years ago, Duncan Simpson has been part of our journey from the ground up. A true legacy champion, he continues to shape the company’s cultivation program with the same dedication, humility, and care that have defined his role since day one.
Duncan, what does a typical day look like?
My day kicks off with the team. It’s all about making sure everyone’s clear on their roles, the equipment’s ready, and the crop operations run smoothly. We’re not just growing plants – we’re growing medicine. Precision and purity play a big role in sustaining consistent results.
What’s the strategy behind the science?
Technique matters. And so does mindset. We focus on doing things the right way, every time, to achieve the highest quality because plant health directly impacts patient health. That’s why I make sure the team feels safe, happy, and supported – culture drives quality. Shifting from a plant-focused role to a people-focused one, which means navigating personalities, pressures, and priorities. I love learning from my team and watching them thrive. Having access to so many people you can learn from and producing medicine to help people is what keeps me so invested and passionate.
What’s the biggest challenge?
It depends who it is. I come from a large family. Ten years ago, when I told them I was growing cannabis… there were raised eyebrows! But now? Some of them use it. Education is everything. Especially in a regional town like Armidale, in New South Wales.
How do you describe your job to people?
It depends on who I am talking to. Armidale is a conservative area, but what I can see clearly is that public sentiment is shifting, and community attitudes are becoming more accepting.
Do you encounter stigma?
Some people are in the dark. People might crack jokes, but nothing too negative. Attitudes are shifting, and community acceptance is growing.
How do you unwind in downtown Armidale?
Well, for cheaper after-work beers we head to the Armidale City Bowling Club. But if I want an unreal feed, I’m heading to The Bolt Inn, Uralla. They’ve restored it beautifully!
